Low bone volume doesn't have to rule out implants. Bone grafting rebuilds the foundation needed for safe, predictable implant placement — expanding candidacy for patients who were told they couldn't proceed.
Book a Free ConsultationWhen a tooth is lost and not replaced promptly, the jawbone beneath it begins to resorb — losing both height and width over time. For an implant to be placed, there must be adequate bone volume to fully encase the titanium post. When there isn't, a bone graft is performed first to rebuild that volume.
A bone graft introduces graft material — derived from donor bone, synthetic sources, or occasionally your own bone — into the deficient area. Over a healing period of 3–6 months, your body replaces the graft material with new, living bone that can then support an implant. It is a well-established procedure with a high success rate.
The type of graft material used depends on the size of the defect, the location, and the patient's medical history. We discuss all options at your consultation.
Bone taken from your own body (typically the chin or jaw) — the biological gold standard, but requires a second surgical site.
Donor bone from a human bone bank, processed and sterilized. The most common choice — eliminates a second surgical site.
Bovine (cow) or porcine (pig) bone mineral, processed to remove all organic material. Excellent scaffold for new bone formation.
Synthetic graft materials (hydroxyapatite, calcium phosphate) — biocompatible, no donor source required, consistent supply.
If you're having a tooth extracted, the single most effective way to preserve future implant candidacy is to place a bone graft into the socket immediately at the time of extraction — before bone loss begins. This is called socket preservation or ridge preservation.
It is a straightforward addition to an extraction procedure that dramatically reduces or eliminates the need for a larger augmentation graft later. We routinely recommend socket preservation for any patient planning to replace the extracted tooth with an implant.
